Charlton Athletic transfer chief gives update on their interest in former Crystal Palace star

Charlton will focus their attention on adding to their strikeforce before they consider a move for Jonny Williams.

The Wales international was a big hit during his six-month stay but is coming out of contract at the end of this month.

Williams, 25, told the South London Press recently that he would love to lock a new deal down with Charlton.

But manager Lee Bowyer felt the former Crystal Palace attacker would have more lucrative options on the table.

Addicks head of recruitment Steve Gallen – speaking before the £200,000 signing of Macauley Bonne from Leyton Orient – said: “He was great for us and I hope it was great for Jonny as well. 

“It got him back in the shop window, and that is what we sold it to him like at the end of December or start of January.

“Come and get yourself in the shop window, play some games and show what you’re all about. That’s from your side. But, for us, come and help us get over the line.

“We can’t afford what he was on at Palace. We would still like to resurrect that, but the priority right now is to get a couple of strikers in.

“If we have money to use we will throw it in there, try and get a couple of strikers in, and then pick it up in a week or two. Everyone loves Jonny at the club – he is a great lad, enthusiastic and a good player. All I can say are great things about him.

“Would we be interested? Definitely. But right now, with the amount of money we’ve got, we have to focus on getting strikers. Once we have done that we can start looking.”
