Millwall boss Harris: Championship will be absolute priority this season – but eight-game August can help my squad

Millwall booked their League Cup second round spot earlier this week but manager Neil Harris has spelled out their priority is the Championship.

A fixture-heavy first month will now involve eight matches after the Lions won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday to set up a tie with Oxford United.

Millwall are unbeaten and face Sheffield Wednesday next at The Den on Saturday.

“The league is of the utmost importance this year and that is going to be our absolute priority,” said Harris, who made eight changes for the victory over the Baggies. “If that means sacrificing performances in the cup and players’ minutes then so be it.

“This competition early on gives us an opportunity to rotate and get players game minutes, to make sure we get to the end of the month and every player in the squad has played competitively in a lot of football. So that when we get to the international break everyone is fit and raring to go.

“That’s what we saw at West Brom – a hungry Millwall squad with 19 or 20 players who have played in the first three games.

“They have all played extremely well for me and I’m looking for exactly the same over the next 10-14 days. I want everyone to be in form through August and to have made at least two if not three starts.”
