Ice-hockey exclusive: Streatham boss Carr hands captaincy to Michael Farn
Streatham player-coach Adam Carr has handed the captaincy to defenceman Michael Farn.
The 31-year-old blueliner has been a standout performer since arriving in South London in 2017, and a top pick on the league all-star team in consecutive campaigns.
Carr had held the captaincy role but has stepped up to take charge of the side following the exit of Jeremy Cornish.
“It’s a huge honour to be given the captaincy for the RedHawks for the coming season” said Durham-born Farn.
“Carrsy has been my captain for the last 10 seasons, so I’ve got some big boots to fill. I will wear the ‘C’ with great pride but for me as a player and person, I’ve always tried to lead by example both on and off the ice.
“I’ll look to carry on and do this in the same way I always have done.”
Farn will be supported by alternate captains Adam Wood and Rupe Quiney, with the latter stepping into the role for the first time this season.
“There are a lot of characters in our room this year and there will be plenty of the lads that lead in various ways,” explained Farn, who was alternate captain last season.
“We want to make sure the High Road is a fortress and no team gets an easy night when they come to play us. There’s a real sense of excitement amongst us heading into the season. We have a lot of belief within the team and the challenge games against Bracknell can’t come quick enough.”
Streatham have a rich history of iconic captains – the long-serving Tony Goldstone and Joe Johnston in good company with the likes of Peter Quiney, John Rost, Ed Koral, Robin Andrew and Gary Stefan over the last four decades or so.
“Farny was an easy choice to be captain” said Carr.
“He leads by example on the ice with his work rate and his desire to win. He is highly respected in the room and understands how we want to play the game.
“His experience will be key to our success this year. I know he is honoured to captain such a great club and will make a great captain.
“Rupe and Woody will be wearing the A’s this year, Streatham means a lot to both of them.
“When they speak, everyone listens. They also lead by example on the ice and want to bring silverware to Streatham. A winning team needs strong leaders and we have three of the best.”
Streatham hit the ice on September 7 and 8 with a double-header challenge weekend. Their league opener is at home to Slough Jets on Sunday September 15.
