Charlton midfielder Josh Cullen: Ireland debut is a dream come true
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Josh Cullen admitted it was “a dream come true” as he picked up the man of the match award on his Republic of Ireland debut on Tuesday night.
The West Ham midfielder, on loan for a second time at Charlton Athletic, started for Mick McCarthy’s side as they beat Bulgaria 3-1 in Dublin.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Cullen. “To get my debut, a win and man of the match, it doesn’t come much better than that.
“I’m delighted, I’m over the moon. The gaffer named the team on Sunday – I had a couple of days to prepare for it. I’ve just been looking forward to it.”
Cullen admits his game time at Charlton has helped kick on his career. He was first called into Ireland’s squad last season after impressing for the Addicks.
“That’s the only way you are going to improve,” he said. “I’m grateful to be playing regularly for Charlton – against good sides and for a good team. That will only stand me in good stead to get more caps for my country.”
