Ice hockey: Adam Carr wants flying Streatham to stay grounded
Streatham player-coach Adam Carr is adamant his team cannot look too far ahead after seven consecutive wins gave them a perfect start to the season.
The South Londoners will look to extend the streak to eight victories this weekend with Bracknell Hornets visiting Streatham Arena on Sunday.
The Hornets are in good form themselves ahead of the game, beating Oxford and Cardiff for a four-point weekend last time out.
Streatham have conceded less goals than anyone in the league and have a higher goals-to-games ratio too. On paper things are looking good, but the coach is still wary about over confidence.
“It’s nice to be sitting at the top of the league right now but it’s very early doors,” said the 35-year old. “There is a very long way to go and there are some good teams we still haven’t faced yet. So we are certainly not getting carried away with the position we are in.
“Looking too far forward is dangerous, so we will just take one game at a time and focus on winning each night.”
Streatham had last weekend off but maintained their first place position ahead of a chasing pack containing Slough and the RedHawks next opponents Bracknell.
The league table does mislead somewhat, as potential title challengers Chelmsford and Invicta have played less league games than some of those in higher standings. Likewise Solent Devils in fourth place are also unbeaten, winning all five of their games so far.
Streatham have no league game next weekend either thanks to a cup game scheduled against Haringey Huskies, so its vital that the team show up to play in the Bracknell game and don’t allow the others to gain ground.
“I am pleased with the way we have been playing” admitted Carr. “It’s never going to be perfect all of the time but the boys have been working hard every week and buying into the way we want to play.
“It’s so far so good and we will do our best to keep it that way.”
Face off on Sunday is at 6.45pm at Streatham Arena and tickets are on general sale.
