No slip up by Lewisham’s Dan Azeez ahead of Golden Contract reserve fight
Lewisham light-heavyweight Dan Azeez tuned up for his December 14 bout against Dec Spelman with a stoppage of Edgars Sniedze at Bethnal Green’s York Hall on Saturday night.
The Southern Area light-heavyweight champion is meeting Spelman in a reserve fight in the Golden Contract tournament.
If any of the boxers drop out of that competition – with the winner landing a two-year deal that will see them box five times for six-figure purses – then a coin toss will take place to decide if Azeez or Spelman are a late entrant.
“I’ve got to prove myself,” said Azeez. “Not only to the public, but to myself. I want to be known as one of the best about, so you’ve got to get in these fights.
“It’s not easy. No-one owes you anything. You’ve got to get in there and put it all on the line against these top domestic fighters.
“There are other guys who are maybe more high profile [in the Golden Contract]. Most of them have boxed British level comfortably. I guess it isn’t my time – everything is timing.
“We’ll do it – step by step.”
