AFC Wimbledon striker could be set for surgery to solve hamstring woes

Kwesi Appiah is set to see a specialist today – with fears his hamstring injury could end the AFC Wimbledon striker’s season.

The summer signing from Crystal Palace has battled with the problem for nearly the entire campaign.

And Dons manager Neal Ardley has confirmed that surgery might be the best course of action to finally get Appiah back on the right path.

“Our physio Stuart Douglas is taking Kwesi to see a specialist today,” said Ardley. “Where it has healed is hamstring tendon and not hamstring muscle. That’s a big difference. Where the scar tissue is there still seems to be a gap in the fibres underneath. Although it is a lot smaller, those fibres need to knit together to make it stronger.

“Speaking to a lot of people who have had these injuries and dealt with them, it’s telling us he might need something to get this injury over the line – that might be an operation or an injection.

“Probably the best-case scenario is an operation to totally get him over it.

“You wouldn’t be far away [from Appiah missing the rest of the season]. He has been out 14 weeks now. If you say it will be eight to 10 weeks by the time we get him fit.

“It’s a difficult one. If we want to get Kwesi back playing at full tilt and without worrying about it then it might have to be the best option.”
