Ice-hockey: No issues for Streatham as they motor through NIHL Cup group stage
Streatham alternate captain Adam Wood hailed his team mates after a thumping win over north London rivals Haringey Huskies completed a successful group stage of the NIHL Cup.
The RedHawks bounced back from a disappointing league defeat to Solent Devils the week prior, by winning back to back games last weekend.
An 8-0 win on the road at Cardiff Fire was followed by a comprehensive victory on home ice against the Haringey Huskies 24 hours later.
“It’s nice to be heading towards the Christmas break with things going our way,” explained Wood, who is now one of the club’s longest serving players.
“Despite hitting a small Solent speed bump a couple of weeks ago, our season is working out how we had hoped.
“That loss was likely a good reality check for us as I know that no one in the room liked that bitter taste and won’t want it again.”
Goalies Damien King and Nate Gregory shared duties over a weekend that saw the RedHawks score an impressive 16 goals without reply.
Danny Ingoldsby, Ryan Watt and Vanya Antonov all scored two goals each at Cardiff, while there was a first league goal of the season for local teenager Conner Smith and a solo effort from Rhys McCormick.
Smith and Ingoldsby scored again for the RedHawks against Haringey. Captain Michael Farn and Scott Bailey top scored with two each. Ziggy Beesley and Brandon Miles also lit the lamp on a night to forget for the north London side.
Table topping Solent dropped a point at home to Bracknell Hornets losing in overtime.
Streatham head to Chelmsford Chieftains tomorrow followed by a home game against MK Thunder on Sunday.
The depleted Chieftains also suffered an overtime loss last week, away at Slough Jets, but will be at full strength.
“Chelmsford are title contenders along with us and the trip to the Riverside could prove a tricky test,” admitted Wood. “But I know we have a great team who all share one common goal – we’ll be ready. They’ve dropped points so far but we’re under no illusions what a test it will be.”
Streatham will play the NIHL Cup final in mid-February against old rivals Invicta Dynamos.
