Herne Hill Harriers compete in South of the Thames Championship

Herne Hill Harriers’ senior athletes will contest the South of the Thames Cross Country Association main long standing annual championship race in Croydon’s Lloyd Park tomorrow.

Men and women all run together, albeit in two separately scored individual and team races within the overall race over an undulating parkland course of three laps of 4km each in distance.

The first six male and female athletes from each club to cross the finish line will form the scoring teams. The SOTTA was formed in 1893 and has a rich history within the cross country discipline in club athletics.

Harriers are hosting their informal festive annual Christmas Road Relays on Tooting Common on Sunday (report at 10am for an 11am start).

It is open to all club members and outside visitors. Although attracting mainly the young athletes in the club it also usually features some senior runners as well as parents.

The relay comprises three stages, each of around two miles with the aim of mixing the teams to result in similar running speeds across the teams, although some family teams invariably feature in what is a low key, but nevertheless competitive celebratory event.
