Millwall manager Gary Rowett gives verdict on FA Cup win over Newport County

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Gary Rowett has given his verdict on Millwall’s FA Cup win over Newport County.

The Lions assistant manager Callum Davidson was on post-match media duties at the weekend.

And Rowett echoed his number two’s sentiments about a the South London side doing a professional job against League Two opposition.

The Millwall manager said: “We controlled the game with the ball – that’s always important against a team like Newport, if you give them too many chances with the ball early in the game they can put you under massive pressure.

“I didn’t feel we really came under too much pressure but alternately I’d like us to be a little more incisive with some of our things. I’ve said it in the last few games but we get in some really good positions and we just need that final action – that pass, or bit of quality or run – to create a chance.

“They are the things we’re working on. We feel as though we’ve looked a lot more assured in games, we’ve taken control of games a lot better in terms of possession but the challenge is to break teams down.

“A lots been made of the pitch but it isn’t a criticism. Everyone is working really hard but the amount of rain we’ve had in November just means that the pitch is really difficult at the moment.

“It’s a hard one because you don’t want to just take the easy option of going back to front all the time, we still want to do the right things. But we’ve got to maybe just adapt that in games where teams drop in against you.”
