Stormzy thanks fans with free gig
Stormzy thanked his South London fans for helping his second album and latest single top the charts with a free gig.
The grime artist was at Boxpark Croydon to cheer people up hours before Blue Monday – supposedly the most depressing day of the year.
Stormzy first posted about the surprise pop-up show on Twitter and Instagram on Saturday with a love heart emoji. The post was followed by an update which revealed the secret pop-up location.
More than 1,200 people queued to see the rapper shortly after 4pm, and saw him perform tracks from Heavy is The Head, including Blinded By Your Grace and Vossi Bop.
He also performed a few bars from his new track Still Disappointed, which hasn’t yet been performed publicly. He also spent time meeting fans and talking selfies after the show.
The rapper, born and raised in South Norwood, said: “It’s a real blessing from God to have my career – I thank and appreciate everyone in here. The kind of career I’ve had, I owe to you guys.
“A free show is the least I can do for my fans and I wish I could shower you all individually with love. Thank you for allowing me to be the artist I am and for allowing me to be the top of my game.”
