Robin Jones, the fourth runner across the line, was also the M45 champion.

Other medal winners from Herne Hill were Mike Boyle, taking M55 bronze, and Tony Macdowall the M35 silver.

Club president Keith Newton was part of a M50-59 gold medal winning Brighton & Hove team as he raced for his second-claim club, who wear a different style red-and-black vest at the Sussex County Masters Championship at Lancing. Newton also won the Sussex M55 silver medal.

Great Britain U20 international Charlotte Alexander returned to competitive action in fine style after recent injury as she recorded a very good win at Surrey Schools Cross Country Championship in the Senior Girls race at Reigate Priory.

Also on the Surrey Hills, Herne Hill men added fell racing to their indoor and outdoor track, cross country, road, trail and parkrun repertoire with a good result at the Box Hill fell race on Saturday.

The course was 12.2km long, with 600m of elevation and Harriers won the men’s team event, which was scored on the first four finishers, narrowly beating last year’s winners Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets with scores of 42 for Herne Hill and 45 for their closest rivals on the day.

Victoria Park had the first and fourth men to finish, but Herne Hill closed all four team counters in the first 14, while Victoria Park waited until 27th for their fourth runner. Jack Dickenson (seventh), Angus Butler (10th), Josh Pewter (11th) and Eoin Brady (14th) were the winning team scorers with Joe Elliott (36th) and Duane Matthews (75th) further finishers.

Fiona de Mauny moved down in race distance from 8km cross country to 400m track racing as she followed up her Surrey League last Saturday with 60.94 for two laps of the indoor track just seven days later for a good indoor season opener.

Others who raced over 400m at Lee Valley included David Ryan, clocking a good 49.12, Isaac Ogunlade (51.64), and Peter Phillips (52.38), all three winning different races on Saturday. Memphis Ayoade ran a very encouraging 52.51 in his U20 400m heat.
