Police appeal for witnesses as moped rider dies following Peckham collision

Police are appealing for witnesses a week after a fatal collision in Southwark.

Police were called shortly after 3.30pm on Sunday, January 19, to reports of a collision in Dennetts Road, Peckham.

Officers attended and found a blue BMW car – registration number B18 YFN – had been in collision with a moped and a parked car.

The male rider of the moped was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on Monday, January 20.

He has been identified as 50-year-old Fida Yassine, of Southwark. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The BMW driver and a female passenger spoke with officers at the scene. It was reported that two men had made off from the BMW on foot.

On Tuesday, January 21, police arrested the 23-year-old driver of the BMW. They subsequently arrested a 27-year-old man on January 23, and a 21-year-old man on January 24. The woman was not arrested.

All three men have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector James Stanyer, of the Met’s South East command unit, said: “This was a tragic incident which resulted in the death of an innocent man riding his moped.

“Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident, and need assistance from the public to piece together what happened on that Sunday afternoon.

“I want to hear from any members of the public who witnessed the collision, and in particular the moments before the collision. Did you see anything suspicious? Do you recall seeing people getting into a car near to Dennetts Road? Or did you notice anything unusual about the BMW, its occupants and the way in which the car was being driven?

“I also want to hear from anyone who saw the aftermath of the incident and may recall two men running from the scene.”

Witnesses or anyone with information should call South East CID on 07788 916 864. To remain anonymous please contact the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or here.
