Herne Hill Harriers – Katie Snowden sets new indoor club record
HERNE HILL HARRIERS
Katie Snowden set a new club record for a female running the indoor 3,000m in Glasgow, writes Geoff Jerwood.
It was Snowden’s first time in competition since the summer and also her maiden attempt at a track 3,000m as she used the event as racing practice before flying off to South Africa for a training camp ahead of April’s Commonwealth Games.
Snowden revised the Herne Hill record to 9:13.54.
Three youngsters charged to brilliant individual victories at the Surrey Cross-Country Championships in Dorking on Sunday.
Phoebe Bowen produced a classic piece of front running to open up a 16 second winning margin. She was backed up by Johanna Nicholson in fourth. Hebe Hunter finished eighth. With fourth team-scorer Stella Thomas closing in 13th it was a comfortable team win for the under-13 girls.
Christo Chilton ran the legs off his rivals in a top-class under-13 boys field. He was followed by an excellent fifth placing for Jacob Taylor, who is proving to be one of the finds of the season.
The third Herne Hill individual win went to Eva Holland. In her first year in the under-15 age group she produced a relentless display of front running.
Poppy Craig-McFeely (fourth), Isobel Penniceard (seventh) and Tilly Stevens-Cox (18th) ensured a resounding team win for the under-15 girls.
The under-15 boys secured the bronze team medals with Charlie Krammer finishing ninth and backed up by Jaden Kennedy (15th), Joe Roberts (19th) and Jacob Alley (29th).
Harriers’ combined under 17/under-20 women’s team also secured bronze with good performances from Zoe Tompkins, Olivia Stillman and Tatiana Cooke.
Ella Newton (under-20 women) secured a first podium finish as she took second place in the Kent Cross Country Championships at Brands Hatch – with sister Lily (under-17 women) claiming sixth spot.
In the senior races at Denbies, Harriers women’s team placed fifth as newcomer Georgie Grgec led her team home. Grgec placed sixth. She was followed by Karen Ellison (15th), Fiona de Mauny (23rd) and Stacy Wheat (37th).
A depleted men’s team placed sixth.
