James McCarthy on Crystal Palace loss to Sheffield United: We need to put things right

BY ROB SUTHERLAND

James McCarthy emphasised the need to recover following two disappointing defeats in a row, in the aftermath of the loss to Sheffield United — a game where the result arguably didn’t reflect the performance.

“We did well in the first half, but unfortunately we’ve lost the goal. And then it was just one of the games in the second half. They got the goal and they made it difficult for us, but it was disappointing.”

“We need to start getting points on the board, get going next week and make sure we can put things right again.”

McCarthy hasn’t dwelled on Palace’s lack of activity in the transfer window, instead preferring to focus on the return of key players to the first team.

“We’re getting a few boys back and hopefully now we can get going again. We go to Everton and we need to make sure we put a good performance in. The most important thing is to get the boys back and to make sure that we have enough within the team and within the squad after two disappointing results.”

The midfielder also refused to blame Vicente Guaita for the defeat, following the goalkeeper’s uncharacteristic error.

“To be fair, Vicente [Guaita] has been amazing all season. He’s won more games for us to be honest. It’s disappointing to lose the game and at this moment in time we’ve got to regroup and we’ve got a big game next week.”
