Charlton manager Lee Bowyer gives verdict on Tariqe Fosu’s move to Brentford

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer reckons Tariqe Fosu has all the attributes to flourish at Brentford.

The Addicks had a sell-on inserted in the deal when the Wandsworth-raised winger, 24, joined Oxford United in the summer after becoming a free agent.

Fosu was sold to the Bees at the end of the last transfer window. He had been offered new terms by the Addicks following promotion in May, but largely to ensure they did not miss out on compensation.

“I’d like to wish him all the best,” said Bowyer. “I never doubted he was a good player. When I first took over he was probably our best player – he scored a lot of goals and got a lot of assists.

“But the next season he got injured in pre-season – it was an injury he’d had at the end of the previous season – and he just could never get going. With the intensity we were playing at last season he couldn’t catch up.

“The way we played didn’t suit him either. He’s a winger and we weren’t really playing that formation. When he did play things just didn’t happen for him.

“He had a good six months at Oxford and I can see him fitting in at Brentford and the way they play. I saw them recently against Forest and I can see why they took Tariqe, he is a tricky winger.”

Fosu has signed a contract with Brentford until the summer of 2023, with an option for a further year. He scored 10 goals for Oxford as he successfully linked back up with ex-Addicks boss Karl Robinson.
