Greenwich’s Daniel Dubois will win European heavyweight title if he beats Joe Joyce in April showdown
Daniel Dubois has been handed a further incentive to beat Joe Joyce on April 11 – with the victor winning the vacant European heavyweight title.
Joyce was initially mandated to fight Marco Huck for the belt in January but the Berlin fighter suffered an injury – Agit Kabayel had vacated.
The European Boxing Union have ruled that the two undefeated British boxers will contest the title.
It means that a whole host of belts will be on the line – WBC Silver, WBO International, British and Commonwealth.
Tyson Fury was Britain’s last EBU champion but other leading lights domestically to hold it include Lennox Lewis, Henry Akinwande, Frank Bruno, Joe Bugner and Henry Cooper.
“The EBU sanctioning this fight for the vacant title is the cherry on the cake,” said promoter Frank Warren.
“They have recognised the magnitude of the fight, the fact that it is between two unbeaten fighters who are the best two up and coming heavyweight forces in world boxing. I am particularly pleased for Joe given that his European shot didn’t happen in January, while for Daniel it nicely continues the ‘every belt’journey we have set him on.”
Greenwich’s Dubois is critical of Joyce switching coach – Ismael Salas taking over for this camp instead of Adam Booth.
“He’s nervous, he’s panicking and he’s regretting signing for this fight,” said Dubois. “It’s starting to dawn on him that this is the last fight of his career.”
