Millwall defender: We failed to perform at Wigan
Murray Wallace was disappointed with Millwall’s performance in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Wigan.
Shaun Hutchinson’s 57th minute own goal leaves the Lions seven points adrift of the Championship top six with 12 games to play.
Defender Wallace said: “Going to Preston and getting such a big result to put us back in touching distance of those top six spots, then we come here and maybe our attitude is wrong – we might have thought it would be an easy game and we simply haven’t performed.
“I’m frustrated with the goal, but as a team we are disappointed because that’s not us playing to our best. There was just too many of us that weren’t at it. Sometimes you can get away with one or two – but as a team we weren’t at it.
“At times we didn’t get our press right, our shape was a little disjointed and that allowed them to get in at us. We didn’t fix it in the second half, we just didn’t get it right.”
Millwall wanted a penalty when Ryan Woods was fouled by Nathan Byrne. A free-kick was awarded but replays showed contact came just inside the box.
“It was one of those that looked like it was on the line, we appealed but I don’t think the referee was ever going to give anything like that,” said Wallace.
Millwall improved following the introduction of Mason Bennett after 67 minutes.
“He was brilliant when he came on,” said the Scot. “He looked really dangerous, taking on players. He was really powerful, I felt he did well when he came on, we had a few chances and could have got back into it.”
Birmingham visit The Den tomorrow night with Millwall needing a reaction if Millwall they are to keep the play-offs as a realistic objective.
“Regardless of where we are in the league, after a defeat you want to bounce back quickly,” said Wallace.
“We are quite lucky we’ve got a game midweek because you never want to sit and linger on a defeat for too long we just need to get our heads back down and get back to what we are good at on Wednesday night and see where that takes us.”
