Gary Cahill: Crystal Palace dug in to get win at Brighton

BY ANDREW McSTEEN

Crystal Palace took all three points at Brighton today in the early Premier League kick-off – putting Roy Hodgson’s side temporarily up to 12th place, on 36 points.

Defender Gary Cahill was named the Premier League man of the match as he saw Jordan Ayew slot home in the 70th minute to seal the victory, Palace’s second clean sheet in a row.

“Conditions weren’t great today, it was an ugly game,” said Cahill to BT Sport after the match. “They were poor conditions, but we won the game at the end of the day.

“We haven’t had a good record against them over in our last three games so I am sure it will mean a lot to the fans. Overall a good game, they’re not always pretty and today was one of them.”

The derby atmosphere saw smoke flares lit by the travelling fans from SE25 when the Eagles went 1-0 up with plenty of interaction between both sets of supporters throughout the 90 minutes.

“There’s a lot of rivalry, we’ll enjoy the win and the fans will enjoy the win, a win away from home,” added Cahill. “Two wins now back to back, which makes things look up, we’re pleased. I thought Brighton played some good football but at the end of the day sometimes you have to dig in and get the result.”
