Greenwich heavyweight Daniel Dubois gets three-week gym break as coronavirus pushes his fight date back to July

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Daniel Dubois has been told to take a three-week break from the gym after his domestic heavyweight clash with Joe Joyce was pushed back until July 11.

The undefeated Greenwich puncher was due to face Joyce next month for the vacant European title in a tasty match up at the 02 Arena.

But the coronavirus outbreak saw Queensberry Promotions reschedule the event for the summer.
Dubois’ trainer Martin Bowers has given all of his fighters time off.

Frank Warren, who promotes Dubois, has been asked if he considered putting the show on behind closed doors.

“Yeah, we had some thoughts about it,” Warren told iFL TV. “But we decided it was such a big fight and needs an atmosphere to work.

“We made a collective decision to push it back to July 11, because hopefully by then we might get back to normality. People who have got tickets can get a refund for the original date or hold on to their tickets for July 11 for what is going to be a great fight.

“It’s all beyond our control [if the event will be okay to be staged at that point] – the government is being advised by scientists.

“The immediate impact is financial to everybody. It will be interesting to see what happens with the TV companies. Sky Sports and BT Sport rely on subscriptions and we don’t want that to be a problem for the industry.

“It’s tough times and no one has got a crystal ball.

“Even if an event went on then some people wouldn’t have the money to buy a ticket for it.

“People’s health comes before anything else.”
