Wimbledon artist for whom her chihuahua provides a sanity claws
For Dante it was Beatrice; for John Lennon it was Yoko and for Peter Andre it was Katie Price… for a time.
But artist Becki Flack has a canine muse, Tita Petita, the seven-year-old chihuahua – the time-travelling and globe-trotting mutt who’s helping her owner survive lockdown.
Becki will be showcasing her artworks at Wimbledon Art Fair Online on May 14-18, how art can bring fun, inspiration and creativity, even in the darkest times.
Despite the constraints of lockdown Becki has found a way to take Tita on a painted virtual tour of the world – from Mexico to Ghana to Japan – and even travel through time, with her portraits of the mini hound as historical figures.
Tita stars in witty portraits as Elizabeth I, Wonder Woman, Audrey Hepburn, Frida Kahlo and the three wise women. There is also one as Cleopatra, though in this one Tita is not sniffing a friend’s asp.
Becki suffers from depression and anxiety but combined her love for painting and her canine best friend to get her through difficult times.
Tita has been invaluable during the lockdown, helping her to escape reality by posing as a virtual time-traveller and armchair globe-trotter, in exotic locations and even as a pilot taking a solo flight across the Atlantic.
Becki is inspired by the notions of identity, appearance, fantasy and dreams – Tita has also been painted as a witch, Gretel, a fairy on a Christmas tree, sailor, rapper, nurse, a bride and groom, in a Japanese garden in a kimono, in a Ghanaian village in a dashiki dress and in the US dressed as a cowgirl.
Beck’s 25th portrait of Tita is as the doomed Marie Antoinette, without cake. This and the other paintings will be on sale at the Wimbledon Art Fair online.
Becki said: “I think people will appreciate their pets more in the lockdown as they offer unconditional love and live in the moment. They find pleasure in simple things. I think pets will love it as they have more time with their humans and more attention.”
