Millwall boss already has transfer plans taking shape for next window

Gary Rowett is set to make strengthening his attacking options a priority in the summer transfer window – with the Millwall manager conceding that it has been an area which has hampered their Championship play-off prospects.

The Lions are likely to need to win nearly all of their remaining six matches to stand a chance of extending their campaign. They head to Charlton tomorrow night.

Millwall have taken two points from a possible nine since the season resumed but had the opportunities to turn their 1-1 draw with Swansea on Tuesday into a victory.

“We’ve created chances to win the games,” said Rowett.

“We’ve just lacked that little bit of a cutting edge up front with enough players performing on the day. That’s been the hard bit. When Jed [Wallace] was performing so well when we first came in, other players weren’t quite stepping up with the goals.

“Matt [Smith] has stepped up with goals recently and no-one else has quite stepped up with the goals alongside him.

“That’s been the challenge – if you keep one player quiet that’s when you need three, four or five threats.

“You have to build with a strong foundation. We’ve got that quite good in terms of that I don’t think anyone has conceded fewer goals than us in the period we’ve been here.

“And the thing that has kept us in and around the top six but not quite kicked on has been that top-end numbers. You saw it against Swansea – Mason goes down injured and we just need that same physical impact and same energy to throw two or three bodies into that front three and maintain it. We’re not in a position to do that.

“These games are great for understanding a little bit more about your squad and your team. Certainly if we’re in the Championship next season then I know where we need to add. If we’re not then I still know where we need to add. Either way it is quite clear to me.”
