Millwall boss: We’ll keep going for Championship play-offs until it is mathematically impossible

Gary Rowett will sit back and watch the other Championship results run in tomorrow as his Millwall side’s 1-0 win at Charlton put them back in the play-off chase.

Jake Cooper’s 81st-minute goal ensured the Addicks’ 24-year wait for a victory over the South London rivals continued.

The result – the Lions’ first victory since football emerged from lockdown – lifted them to eighth in the standings.

“It is up to teams tomorrow,” said Rowett. “I think it’s mainly Cardiff at the moment in that hot spot [sixth]. We’ve got to make sure we keep getting results to put on pressure.

“As much as you don’t want to lose a local derby, we had to win it. We had to make changes to try and win it.

“Our centre-halves showed our system works because Coops is in the box from open play – not a set-piece, open play.

“I can watch the results tomorrow with no pressure at all.

“We’ll keep fighting until it is mathematically impossible. This group has got amazing character.

“I was aware of the [unbeaten] record, as Millwall manager there are plenty of people who mention it to you – most of our directors for one.

“What we had to do today was respect our fans watching at home – try and get a result for them and raise their spirits. The last three games we haven’t had the points we wanted.”
