Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has his say over Millwall’s matchwinning goal

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer reckons that no blame can be attached to Dillon Phillips for Millwall’s matchwinner on Friday night.

The Addicks stopper has been one of the club’s star performers this season and had kept three clean sheets since the season restarted.

But Phillips could only parry Connor Mahoney’s shot in the derby against Millwall, Jake Cooper following up to whip the ball home for an 81st-minute settler.

Asked in the post-match press conference whether he thought his keeper could have done more to prevent the goal, Bowyer said: “No, no I wouldn’t say that.

“It was a good, powerful shot the first one – he did well to save that. Then you’re in the lap of the gods – it could go anywhere. We had a few of them where it went to their defenders. Unfortunately for us it went to their lad instead of us getting a little bit of luck. It was a great finish for a centre-half.”

  • I agree with Lee Bowyer, Dillon made a good save and was unlucky with where the ball finished and Cooper put it away well. For me, having seen the replay a few times, a Charlton player, I think Hemed, but can’t be sure, was tracking back with Cooper and then let him go in the box, so if anyone is to blame, it is that Charlton player for not staying with Cooper.
