Charlton Athletic boss explains why midfielder was subbed off at half time against Millwall

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has confirmed that Albie Morgan’s half-time substitution against Millwall was purely a tactical change.

The midfielder came off at the interval in the derby in SE7. Just before the first period finished the hosts had made a tactical change, Darren Pratley dropping into defence as they switched from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2.

“Albie has done well – but out wide there’s not really that much responsibility of tracking people into the box,” said Bowyer. “It’s a side of the game that he needs to learn.

“The other night [Jed] Wallace ran off him and in behind, he should’ve scored but Dillon [Phillips] made a great save. But it was Albie marking him.

“He had to slot back into the middle of the park alongside Josh [Cullen] and it is a bit too early for him to be playing in the middle of the park. He has brought some good, positive stuff to us.

“It was nothing he had done wrong – just tactically I thought Fieldy [Sam Field] would be better to play alongside Josh.”

  • Hemed should have been pulled off as well then for letting their centre back waltz in to score.

  • Yeah LB we’re all falling for that one.
Why are you protecting ‘wall’s heinous tactics of kicking and elbowing Albie out of the game.
You’re letting Whitestone off the hook too for his pathetic performance as “referee”
