Does Gary Rowett get nervous before matches? Millwall boss on pressure of play-off chase

Millwall will look to boost their Championship play-off prospects at QPR on Saturday – but Gary Rowett has revealed he doesn’t get nervous before matches.

The Lions could move into the top six if they win at Loftus Road and Cardiff City lose at Middlesbrough.

Saturday is the penultimate round of fixtures.

Asked if he feels nerves, Millwall manager Rowett said: “Not really. I never did as a player, I don’t know why I didn’t.

“Some games are different. When you’re on a good run you feel quite calm, confident and content.

“If you’ve maybe lost a game then you’ve got a little bit of an edge to you, because I suppose it’s like anything – you don’t want to go on a bad run, so there is a bit more pressure on the next game.

“As a manager you’ve got to try and ensure that out of all the people who are nervous you don’t want it to be you, because the players need to see that calmness and confidence in them.

“Maybe that’s why – because I know what I’m going to get from the players. I know we’re going to work our socks off and be desperate to win the game.

“What none of us can control is whether we find that little moment of quality to win it, or the opposition do. That’s just how games are on a knife-edge.

“I’ve been pretty calm, certainly the last few weeks. I’ve been there before, that’s quite a nice position to be in. We got Derby in the play-offs and Burton in the play-offs twice, so I’ve had a lot of these ends to the season where there is always something riding on it.

“The more you’ve been in it the more calm you are – because it’s nothing really new.”
