Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer wants side to earn right to stay in Championship – not rely on points deductions for other clubs

Lee Bowyer wants his Charlton side to secure Championship safety themselves – and not rely on points deductions for other clubs.

Sheffield Wednesday could still face sanctions from the EFL that affect the final standings.

Wigan, deducted 12 points for going into administration, head to The Valley tomorrow with the Addicks just above the bottom three.

There has been talk of other clubs outside of the Premier League also struggling not to follow in Wigan’s footsteps, with the Covid-19 pandemic having a major financial impact.

“I’d rather us stay up on merit – we have earned that,” said Addicks boss Bowyer.

“If teams get points deductions then they get them. That will happen, I have no doubt. But we’ve got two games left and I still believe we’ll get enough points to stay in the division.”
