Charlton Athletic get confirmation of Wigan points penalty – but Latics have appeal option

The EFL have confirmed that Wigan Athletic’s 12-point deduction will come into effect after tonight’s final round of Championship matches – but clubs like Charlton Athletic could then face a wait as an appeals process is played out.

The Addicks head to Leeds United tonight looking to secure their second-tier status.

Lee Bowyer’s side are only out of the bottom three on goal difference.

Wigan would take the final drop spot if their points penalty for entering administration was enforced now.

But they could still finish just clear of the relegation zone if they beat Fulham, who are still in the hunt for the second automatic promotion spot.

An EFL statement issued today said: “As previously advised, please note Wigan Athletic’s 12-point deduction for entering administration will be applied to the Championship League table immediately following tonight’s matches.

“Any tables published should apply the deduction, but reference that it is “subject to appeal”.

Sheffield Wednesday are also the subject of an EFL misconduct charge that could also lead to a points deduction.
