Rapist convicted after attack on woman in Catford

A rapist who preyed on a woman who was lost late at night has been convicted.

Danut Bulboana, 21, came across the victim in Catford and sexually assaulted her just before midnight on August 27 last year.

He was convicted of two counts of rape and attempting to suffocate with intent following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court, which concluded today.

The 29-year-old victim had been out with a friend earlier that evening and a cab had dropped her back to the wrong destination.

After attacking the victim, Bulboana walked her to Catford Bridge railway station. She was able to call the police from there.

Nijole O’Brien, from the CPS, said: “This was a terrifying attack on a woman by a complete stranger.

“The victim demonstrated remarkable bravery in leading police officers in a search of the local area, during which they found Bulboana.

“The victim was able to identify him despite the fact he had changed out of his clothes to avoid being caught. Bulboana denied the rape, claiming that all he had done was comfort and assist the victim.

“The prosecution case included strong witness testimony from the victim, DNA evidence and CCTV footage. Bulboana will now have to face the consequences of his actions.

“I hope this conviction goes some way in providing closure to the victim.”

Bulboana will be sentenced on September 8.
