Exclusive: Tom Lockyer activates release clause at Charlton Athletic

Tom Lockyer has taken up the clause allowing him to leave Charlton Athletic.

The Wales international now has a month to find himself a new club before it activates.

It means the Addicks still have a slim chance of persuading Lockyer that his future does still lie in SE7.

But that is only likely to be possible if the 25-year-old could see positive changes at the South London club – with doubts over the long-term future.

When Charlton were relegated from the Championship there was an option in Lockyer’s favour for him to leave for nothing.

Swansea City were also interested in the centre-back before he opted to join the Addicks last summer after becoming a free agent at Bristol Rovers.

Lockyer had a set timescale in which he had to trigger his clause and it now leaves him in a position where he can weigh up his best options over the next month.

He played every minute in 43 matches for the South Londoners last season – only missing the other three games due to suspension.
