Hercules Wimbledon AC round-up: Plenty of PBs at Tooting Bec meetings
Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s runners posted personal best performances at two track meetings at Tooting Bec.
Fourteen PBs were posted at the South London Athletics Network meeting on Saturday.
Fastest of the sprinters was last season’s England U15 200m champion Freddie Arkell, who has moved up to the under 17 age group. He was third in the 100m in 11.45 seconds and second in the 200m in his first race over the distance this summer in 22.82. It was his fastest time of the year having clocked 22.93 at an indoor meeting at Lee Valley in February.
Teenager Marcus Gayle posted 25.27 in winning his 200m race battling against a 2.3 metres per second headwind – a massive improvement on his PB of 29.99 set in last year’s Surrey championships.
Romane McFarlane posted two lifetime bests winning his U15 100m 200m races in 13.05 and 26.83.
Newcomer Khalid Ali clocked a PB in the 200m (25.89). Fellow U15 sprinter Nijye Orlu posted two PBs – 13.04 to finish second in his 100m and winning his 200m event in 26.95.
Other winners included U15 girls Cora Barnett, who took her 200m in a PB of 27.36 and Kyra Stone, who clocked a PB of 27.37 to win her race.
Teenager Lulu Weisz got off to a flying start to her delayed summer racing programme with a PB of 2:18.48 in finishing fourth in her 800 m race, her first track race of the year. It eclipsed her 2:19.69 set in taking the bronze medal in last year’s South of England U15 championships at Ashford, Kent.
Georgina Clarke also had a fine run in her first track race since August 2019. She clocked 10:26.24 at an open meeting at Tooting Bec last week to improve on her 10:30.63 posted in Norway in June 2019. Her time ranks her 12th in the U17 age group this summer.
Matt Gibbons finished second in the 3,000m in the London Inter-club Challenge meeting at Lee Valley on Saturday.
