Age UK Lambeth appeals for volunteers for befriending service to offer elderly support

An elderly support charity has created a service to bridge the gap between generations.

Age UK Lambeth is appealing for volunteers for a befriending service. The service matches volunteers in the borough with older people to help prevent loneliness and isolation.

A spokesman from the charity said: “The service is vital for people who struggle to get out or who have lost their confidence.”

Nick, a volunteer has been going around to see Norma for the past 10 months. Norma had asked Age UK Lambeth for some help at home and Nick missed talking to his grandparents.

She said: “I used to have loads of friends when I was working but some have moved, some have passed away, so now I don’t have many friends.”

Nick said: “Within 10 minutes I knew it would be fine. We had a cup of tea and by the end it was like we had known each other for ages. It isn’t daunting, it doesn’t take a lot of your time .”

To volunteer, call 020 7346 6800.
