Billy Mitchell makes right wing-back admission as he enjoys return to Millwall midfield role

Billy Mitchell is happy to be back in a central midfield role after admitting playing at right wing-back had “capped” his impact.

The 20-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in the Lions’ last two Championship matches, the first time he has done that in his career.

“I was enjoying being in the team at right wing-back but I felt my performances were being capped because it wasn’t my natural position,” said Mitchell, inset, after the 1-0 win over Reading at The Den on Tuesday night.

“Now being back in midfield I feel like I’m growing in confidence and hopefully I can start contributing a bit more to the team.”

Ryan Leonard has started the last four matches at right wing-back, Danny McNamara losing his place following the 2-0 reverse to Luton.

“I said to Lenny that he is doing me a favour and not really helping Danny Mac out a bit,” said Mitchell. “You stick there mate, I don’t want you in here.

“Prior to the back end of last season I was really frustrated. I felt like I’d been around the team for a long time but not really started any significant number of games. I got a bit of a taste at the back end of last season and have played a fair amount of games this season.”
