Charlton Athletic boss facing juggling act with loanees following Chelsea deal

Charlton Athletic are set to leave a loan signing out of their matchday squad rather than convert one into a permanent deal.

The Addicks have six loanees and EFL rules mean only five can be included for a fixture.

Mason Burstow’s instant loan return to Charlton after sealing a Premier League move to Chelsea on deadline day leaves manager Johnnie Jackson with a dilemma.

The club have also signed Nile John and Juan Castillo on a temporary basis from Tottenham and Chelsea respectively. The other loan additions are Elliot Lee (Luton), Jonathan Leko (Birmingham) and Akin Famewo (Norwich).

Charlton were in the same situation last season but turned Andrew Shinnie into a permanent until the end of June. The Scot was released in the summer.

Jackson said: “I think it is just going to be a case of juggling and making the loan lads aware that one has to miss out in every matchday squad.

“There will probably be times when that is decided for you with injuries or form.

“It could not be an easy decision – they all could be doing well and then it is harsh to leave someone out but that’s what we’ll have to do. It’s not the ideal situation. We’re happy to have Mason back and available to us.”
