Charlton Athletic squad put through their paces at Woolwich Barracks

Dean Holden took his Charlton Athletic players to Woolwich Barracks for a team-bonding exercise on Tuesday.

The Addicks manager is planning to make a repeat visit during pre-season. Drills included a two kilometre run, pull ups and broad jumps.

“Going back probably about six weeks ago, I bumped into a guy where I’m living in North Greenwich and he’s ex-military,” said Holden, who replaced Ben Garner in the Valley hotseat in December. “We had a really insightful chat. I’ve always had this idea of bringing the players and staff down – basically to see what elite looks like, the leadership and standards of discipline that these guys set.

“Some of the stories are frightening – like where they’ve been, all over the world, and the tours they’ve done.

“Everyone talks about team bonding – what is that? It’s getting a trust, it’s getting a shared purpose between a group of people to go and achieve the result at the end of it.

“I’m quite big on doing different types of things to break the week up.

“We’ve done quite a bit of physical work as well. It’s been really tough physically for them, but they’ve learned a lot as well.

“We will definitely come back pre-season. We’ll be here probably for a couple days. This is just a taster.”
