Charlton boss explains why keeper Ash Maynard-Brewer wore face mask in Barnsley match

Dean Holden has explained why Ashley Maynard-Brewer wore a protective face mask during Charlton’s 2-0 win over Barnsley on Saturday.

The Australian keeper broke his nose while on loan at Ross County last season.

And Holden said Maynard-Brewer’s recent time out after suffering a concussion presented the perfect opportunity to carry out a small procedure.

“They basically manually manipulated it back into position,” the Addicks boss told the South London Press. “That’s just a protective thing for the next couple of week.

“The concussion was nothing to do (with the procedure). From what I’ve been told it is a procedure that has been needed for a while.

“So it was just when we had a little bit of free time to put it back into place again.”

Todd Kane came off with a hamstring injury in the victory against the Tykes. It was the full-back’s debut after signing on loan from Coventry City.

“We’re still waiting (to find out the severity) because we’ve had it looked at,” said Holden yesterday. “We need Coventry involved in it because of the loan, stuff like that. As it stands, right now, I’ve not heard anything official just yet. We should know by the end of today exactly where we’re going to be with that.”
