Charlton boss Johnnie Jackson says club to keep an eye on Jake Forster-Caskey as he returns from injury and goes in search of new contract

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Jake Forster-Caskey finally returned to action after an agonising 10 months out with an ACL injury during Charlton’s home defeat against Lincoln – and boss Johnnie Jackson says the midfielder can now try and earn himself a new contract.

Last season’s player of the year suffered a second ACL issue in three years during the penultimate game of the last campaign but has slowly worked his way back to fitness over the course of the last few months.

He came off the bench midway through the second-period of the game with the Imps and announced his return with the assist for Jayden Stockley to halve the deficit late on.

The 27-year-old, who has been with the South Londoners since 2017, is out of contract at the end of the season but Jackson said the club will be keeping a close eye on him for the rest of the campaign.

“Jake’s been out a long time,” explained the Addicks boss.

“He just wants to play football and show what he can do. He’s well thought of here, the fans love him and he reciprocates that. He loves the club. He’s someone that we’re looking at and if he can prove that he’s over his injuries, which he seems to be doing, day in day out on the training pitch and now back with the team, then it’s brilliant. For me, I know what he can do at this level. It’s great to have that option again.

“Really pleased to have him back. Delighted for the boy, he’s been through a tough time and put the graft in to get back. It wasn’t a sentimental decision to bring him on, I brought him on because I know what he can do. I’ve seen him in the u23s games and in training and he’s looked good.

“I knew he would bring a level of calmness and experience that we needed at that stage of the game. He done that, he got on the ball and picked out some good passes, which we know he can do on his left foot. He put a great delivery in for the goal. Pleased to have him back and pleased it’s another option for me in midfield.”
