Charlton captain George Dobson gives his view on where it went wrong this season

Charlton skipper George Dobson blames “inconsistency” for the Addicks’ mid-table finish in League One.

The South Londoners ended a whopping 15 points off the play-off places in 10th following the 2-2 draw at Cheltenham Town on the final day.

It’s the second season in a row where the Addicks were out of the race for the top six long before the campaign was up. They are now set for a fourth consecutive campaign in the third tier.

“It’s been a frustrating one,” said Dobson, who was handed the captaincy by Dean Holden at the turn of the year.

“It’s been a very inconsistent one. We’ve had some brilliant performances and we’ve had some really bad days. That’s what we’ve got to work on as a team and a club. Find some consistency. That’s what gets you out of the division. A lot of work to be going on in the summer as players and behind the scenes to make sure that this time next season we’re in a much better place.

“It has [been similar to last season]. We’ve been a little bit short at times. At the top of the pitch at the start of the season we didn’t really score enough goals. We’ve just had too many inconsistent performances. I don’t know why.

“Maybe because it’s a young group. I feel that, for the young players, this season will put them in good stead for next. With new players coming into the club hopefully really adding to the squad, putting ourselves into a good position to be strong next year.”
