Charlton interested in Cambridge United centre-back who swept the board at end-of-season awards

Charlton Athletic are interested in a deal for Cambridge United defender Lloyd Jones.

The 27-year-old swept the board for the U’s end-of-season awards.

Jones has also been recently linked with Peterborough United.

He is set to be a free agent at the start of July.

The Plymouth-born centre-back left his hometown club to sign for Liverpool in a £150,000 deal in May 2011. He went on to have loans at Cheltenham, Accrington, Blackpool and Swindon.

Jones joined Luton for an undisclosed fee in January 2018, making 14 appearances before a permanent switch to Northampton.

He has clocked up 69 matches for Cambridge and scored four goals last season. Addicks boss Dean Holden had talked towards the end of last season about adding to their aerial threat to improve their set-piece record, both offensively and defensively.

Charlton have made one signing since the window opened, completing a deal for goalkeeper Harry Isted, who has been released by Luton Town.

The Addicks are in the market for a centre-back after releasing Ryan Inniss, who has signed for Forest Green Rovers.

They are still in negotiations with Michael Hector while Terell Thomas, also due to be out of contract, has committed for another 12 months.
