Coffee, cocktails and vinyl – Jazu bar is about to reopen

A coffee and cocktail bar with an all-vinyl music system will reopen tomorrow.

Having gained a reputation in Camberwell for its quality drinks and sounds, Jazu has found a new home in Peckham, in the hustle and bustle of Rye Lane.

Making its home as part of Market Peckham, the bar will occupy the redesigned ground floor of the five-storey Edwardian building.

Open from morning to night, Jazu has an espresso bar that serves coffee and pastries from 8am and a cocktail and music bar for the evenings from 5pm until close.

The move to Market Peckham comes after Jazu’s pop-up in Camberwell’s Corner Store closed late last year.

The landlord had demanded a 30 per cent increase in rent, forcing Jazu out of the property, which still remains empty.

Jazu co-founder, Jimmy Hanmer, said: “When we opened in Camberwell’s Corner Store, 31 Peckham Road, we really found our groove.

“The space was right, we’d push the tables back after the kitchen closed so there was room to dance, the decks and speakers were front and centre.

“We invited local DJs to come and play on Fridays and Saturdays, and found a community of like-minded people through this network.

“It felt really special there – a place that people told their friends about, and would return to – which was always what we wanted.

“We’re so excited to open Jazu again – it feels like we’ve been able to grow bigger, while also becoming more focused.

“Peckham feels like the right place to be – it’s like Camberwell’s big brother.”

Mr Hanmer has collected and played vinyl since he was 14, growing up in Skegness. Over the past 20 years Mr Hanmer has built up a broad collection of more than 3000 soul, funk and jazz records.

Playing its favourite albums, in full, throughout the week, Jazu is still on the lookout for sought-after DJs in the area to take to the decks on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
