Concussed Craig MacGillivray suffered memory loss – Charlton Athletic keeper out of Port Vale match

Craig MacGillivray will miss Charlton Athletic’s League One match at Port Vale tomorrow after suffering delayed concussion in last Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Burton Albion.

The keeper only stepped into the side after first choice Joe Wollacott broke a bone in his finger in the warm-up which ended his World Cup dream.

Addicks manager Ben Garner has confirmed that Ashley Maynard-Brewer, recalled from his loan at Gillingham, will start against Vale.

Nathan Harness, also recalled from his temporary stint with Bromley, is set to be on the bench.

MacGillivray took a boot to the face against the Brewers.

“We’ve got eight [players] out now,” said Garner. “Craig played ever so well on Saturday, he did great, but he actually suffered delayed concussion. He was fine when he took the collision in the game, he was fine at half-time and fine in the second half. Unfortunately he took a turn for the worse in the dressing room after the game and had to go to hospital at Burton.

“It was a bad concussion. He’s at home recovering. He certainly won’t be available for tomorrow. Our priority is Craig’s health and well-being. We’ll ease him back in to football at the right time.

“It’s just a daily assessment. It is a head injury, heavy impact and he suffered some memory loss.”

Maynard-Brewer joined Gillingham on loan in July but quickly suffered a dislocated shoulder which has kept him out.

“Ash and Nathan are two talented young goalkeepers and the plan for Ash was that he was going to Gillingham to be number one there and play a host of games in League Two – which would’ve been fantastic for his development. But he picked up the injury. He’s been back with us rehabilitating and training with us for the past several weeks. I’ve been really impressed with him.

“He’s a really talented goalkeeper with a fantastic mentality. Great maturity for his age. He will play tomorrow and Nath will be on the bench.

“I’m fully expecting Ash to take his opportunity. He’s got my full trust and confidence tomorrow. Hopefully this can be the start of a very successful Charlton career for him.”
