Cops charged over incident in which man was shot in Wimbledon

Two cops will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged over an armed police operation in Wimbledon in 2018, in which a 23-year-old man was shot.

The charges of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, and attempted GBH with intent, follow an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The shooting happened during a pre-planned operation in Haydons Road, Wimbledon, on December 3, 2018 which resulted in a man being taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The IOPC concluded an investigation in November 2019 and in January this year referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which has now authorised the charges.

Officer NX1 has been charged with unlawful wounding with intent contrary to Section 18, Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

Officer MY55 has been charged with attempted unlawful wounding with intent contrary to Section 1(1), Criminal Attempts Act 1981.

They will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 25.
