Dan Azeez wins Southern Area title after impressive stoppage of Charlie Duffield at Greenwich’s 02 Arena

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Unbeaten Dan Azeez is the new Southern Area light-heavyweight champion after a sixth-round stoppage of Charlie Duffield at Greenwich’s 02 Arena.

The Lewisham fighter was too classy for his fellow challenger, gradually breaking him down with a quality selection of punches.

Duffield had a big swelling under his eye within the opening minute of the contest and Azeez was easily the more technical fighter.

Duffield, from Canning Town, began to absorb heavy punches and the fifth was big for Azeez as he banged home big right hands.

It looked a matter of time before the ending came and Duffield’s legs dipped not long before Azeez chalked up his ninth professional victory.

The towel came in from Duffield’s corner but Azeez still landed a couple more shots to put him to the canvas before the referee waved the contest over.

Azeez said: “I feel like it’s a dream – fighting for the first time at this beautiful arena.

“We move on to whatever the objective is. A big shout out to MTK and Matchroom for getting me on the show. Hopefully this is the start of my career properly on the big stage.”
