Dulwich Gallery showcases photography and portraits from around the world by Adrian Whittle

More Travels With My Camera at the Jeannie Avent Gallery in East Dulwich is showing a series of street photography and portraits from around the world taken by Adrian Whittle.

Over the last few years, the traveller and former head of culture, libraries, learning and leisure at Southwark council has travelled extensively and recorded his encounters with everyday people, in writing and photography.

The 61-year-old said: “For me, a photograph is often the culmination of a longer exchange with a stranger who initially interests me because of their face, clothing, or activity.

“I often spend time with them, asking about their lives and listening to their stories. People will often reveal quite intimate things about themselves if someone shows interest, even a stranger.

“Of course, this means that I must be prepared to answer quite searching questions too, including about my family, income and marital status.”

Mr Whittle’s pictures capture culture as well as history, such as one photo that was taken in Kayah Sate, Myanmar in January 2020, just a short time before the military coup.

He said: “In a remote village I met two wonderful elderly ladies – Bilot and Bilone. Both of them wore the brass neck rings traditional in their community.

“We spent several hours together and I was able to take a number of candid shots as we sat in their house.

“While we chatted, their grandchildren came in and played for a while. One climbed up on Bilone’s lap and I was lucky enough to capture the moment.”

The exhibition will see the launch of a limited edition book, also entitled More Travels With My Camera, which includes many of the photographs on show and some of the stories behind them.

More Travels With My Camera runs until November 2.
