Elephant and Castle walking tours… embark on a history of communities and cultures

Free animated walking tours will take place this August which bring to life the amazing history of Zone 1’s Elephant and Castle in London.

Following the success and sell-out of the animated walking tours in Elephant and Castle earlier this year, members of the local community will again take advantage of an opportunity to learn about the rich and diverse history and heritage of Elephant and Castle.

Visitors can expect a host of music and performers, including a salsa dance workshop performed by Yuripari Dance Group from all parts of Latin America.

Henri Gaobi, musical director of African drumming group Kaagô, will also be playing traditional Afro-Caribbean music along the tour stops, accompanied by dancers.

The tour is being delivered by John Whelan the artistic director of People’s Company.

On the tour, actors will bring to life famous characters from the area and tell their fascinating stories as you embark on a journey of the history of the culturally-diverse area.

Discover Charles Babbage, the inventor of the first computer, and find out about the civic history of the Old Town Hall.

The fascinating history of the health centre in the Walworth Road will also be delved into, along with the multitude of communities and cultures which have called Elephant and Castle its home over the centuries.

At the end of the tour there will also be exciting offers and tastes from Castle Square’s food traders, including some special discounts.

A fun quiz and prizes are also on offer to exchange throughout a selection of the traders at Castle Square and Ash Avenue.
