Encounters… street photography from India and Bangladesh at the Jeannie Avent Gallery

Encounters is an exhibition of street photography and portraits from India and Bangladesh.

The exhibition will be at the Jeannie Avent Gallery, 14 North Cross Road, in East Dulwich.

Encounters is the work of writer and photographer Adrian Whittle.

It follows his recent show in the Barbican Library Gallery, Travels With My Camera.

This will be Mr Whittle’s third exhibition at the North Cross Road Gallery.

The show will display new work from 2023, much of it shown for the first time.

Mr Whittle is also the former head of culture, libraries, learning and leisure for Southwark council.

Mr Whittle said: “For me a photograph is often the culmination of a longer exchange with a stranger who initially interests me because of their face, clothing, or activity.

“I often spend time with them, asking about their lives and listening to their stories.

People will reveal quite intimate things about themselves if someone shows interest, even a stranger.”

The exhibition includes portraits, candid street shots and tells the stories behind some of the pictures.

Mr Whittle often keeps in contact with the subjects of his photography, searching them out on return visits to their cities and presenting them with copies of their pictures.

The exhibition will run from April 13 until April 25.

Opening times are 10am to 5pm apart from Fridays when it closes at 6pm and Sundays when it will open from 11am.
