Exeter boss Matt Taylor – a former Addick – in the running for Charlton Athletic job

Matt Taylor is thought to be under consideration for the vacant managerial position at Charlton Athletic.

The 40-year-old former centre-back, who had a two-season spell with the Addicks as a player, won automatic promotion with Exeter City in the campaign just completed.

Taylor replaced the long-serving Paul Tisdale in June 2018 and they only missed out on the League Two play-offs in his first campaign by a point.

He made the move to Charlton from the Grecians in July 2011, when Chris Powell was in charge, and was released at the end of the 2012-13 season. He featured 53 times at first-team level.

Exeter will be in the same division as the South Londoners next season after Taylor steered them to a second-place finish.

It was reported recently that Taylor’s budget would be affected by rising costs on a planned new training ground.

But he has talked about them looking to do more than just survive.

“Everyone talks about this league being an incredible league with the size of the clubs and how well they’re backed financially, but we’ve got to back ourselves as well,” he told BBC Sport.

“It’d be wrong for me to say we’re targeting 20th place right now, it’d be wrong for me to say we’re targeting the play-offs – we’ve got to assess the league.

“Stability’s the best word to use, we want to be a stable club in League One.

“The Trust board have said that for a countless number of seasons now and that’s what we’re working towards.

“But stability might mean staving off a relegation battle, it might mean pushing for the play-offs, as long as we can compete consistently, that’s what we’re looking to do.”
