Exhibition: Our Journey, Our Story by Refugee Action hosted at Bermondsey Project Space
A lot of time is spent talking about refugees as numbers, now a group of artists are coming together to show them as people.
Our Journey, Our Story has been organised by Refugee Action and will be hosted at the Bermondsey Project Space from June 20 to June 24.
Experiences of the traumatic UK asylum system and the heartbreak of refugee migration will be shown using art in this free exhibition.
Daria, an artist and refugee from Ukraine, said: “From this exhibition I would really like for people to feel the same feelings that refugees go through, so when they walk by this art they feel more compassionate about people who come to this country that are less fortunate than them.”
The art mediums used by these talented artists include weaving, fine art, comics, videography and AI generated art.
Artists from Chad, El Salvador, Ukraine, Trinidad and Tobago, Pakistan and Syria will have their work exhibited.
Their names will not be referenced in full due to the many problems asylum seekers face today.
In their pieces, the artists reflect on their own journey to get to the UK.
At the same time this event will recognise and celebrate the accomplishments and talents that refugees in the UK have.
Ali Noyce, head of fundraising at Refugee Action, said: “Refugees and people seeking asylum have often suffered unimaginable trauma and are then forced to continue their fight to be heard in the UK.
“This exhibition will allow these artists to tell the world their story.”
