First Love Community Radio celebrates Lewisham Borough of Culture Black History Month

History, culture, and community are coming together to celebrate the seldom heard voices of Lewisham for four weekends in October with First Love Community Radio (FLCR).

As part of Lewisham Borough of Culture 2022 Black History Month events, FLCR will be broadcasting music, conversation, and topics affecting life in Lewisham, via its online Mixcloud radio station.

Programming will be created, and presented by the community, and broadcast from noon until midnight Saturdays and Sundays from October 1-28.

The whole project will also be recorded so listeners will have a second chance to listen.

First Love Community Radio is building on the richness and legacy started 30 years ago, when it began broadcasting to Lewisham in October 1992 with its call sign A vision from the streets.

Youth and programming co-ordinator Lloyd Mitchell said: “This is the perfect way to blend all elements together, giving a voice to the seldom heard in the community and sharing with a multigenerational, and diverse audience. Each weekend will bring together a blend of music, interviews, vox pops and features”.

Week one showcases some of Lewisham young, most gifted and talented, with young people from the borough taking the lead.

Week two tells the history of pirate radio in Lewisham hearing from original pirate DJs as well as people employed to find pirate stations and close them down.

Week three explores the connections between music, food, wellness and well-being.

From the position that wellness and well-being are not just about the absence of disease; and how we use music and food as tools in this area.

Week four is about family, its importance, where help and support come from, and the traditions and cultures that uphold family values from different cultures.

Programming will be supported by a dynamic display in Lewisham Library window throughout the month of October.
