Former Crystal Palace and Charlton midfielder released by League Two side

Former Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic midfielder Jonny Williams has been released by League Two side Swindon Town.

The attacking midfielder – now 29- progressed through the ranks at Crystal Palace and made 70 appearances at Selhurst Park.

Former Sunderland playmaker Williams joined Charlton in 2019 after he was released by the Eagles. He featured 66 times during his time at the Valley, scoring twice and picking up six assists.

Williams played 84 games for Swindon across his two-year spell, scoring 15 goals and registering 10 assists.

Scottish Premiership side Hibernian tried to sign Williams in January, but a deal to Easter Road never materialised.

When Hibs boss Lee Johnson was asked in his press conference on Friday afternoon if Williams was still a target this summer, he said: “Jonny’s one that’s out of contract so would naturally come into a club our size’s consideration, but at the same time there are so many factors.

“Every player that’s out of contract, including our own, go into that pot of potential availability, and then the player’s got to be affordable, accessible and available.”

Williams was included in Robert Page’s  26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
